In-House Coaches Meeting for The Fall 2004 Playing Session

Overview

·        56 teams & 540 players

·        Introduction of board members

·        Provide e-mail address to age-group commissioner

Significant Dates

·        8/28 & 9/4 Field preparation

·        8/29 Club Referee class 3-5 PM

·        9/11  First week of games

·        9/13 & 9/15  Y-license at SP Middle School 6 to 9 PM (no cost)(a sign-up sheet was circulated and returned to the Coach & Player Development Commissioner)

·        10/30  Last week of scheduled games

·        11/6  Field maintenance (tentative)

Schedules

·        Practice schedule provided.  May start on Monday (8/30/04).  Make changes through Ron Schultz.  Revised practice area layout due to High School use of the Middle School fields.  High School practices will be held in the fenced-off area.  If that area is open SPSA can use it, but the High School teams have priority.   Any problems talk to John Papinchak or Walt Kivala; do not confront High School coaches.

·        U5/U6’s will use area beside the Middle school; keep teams back toward the basketball courts.  The lower small field is also available.  SPSA will pursue getting the grass cut there more often than has been typical in the past.

·        Game schedule provided.  Rain-out/make-ups of full weeks of play will be addressed on an as-needed basis.  Partial-week rainouts will be made up during weeknights; coordinate with Bob Huddart.  Since U8 games finish early on Saturdays, later times in the day may also be available for make-up games.

·        With the expanded seating area along Field A, coaches should remind parents to keep the walkway clear.  Parents should also be reminded to park across Triphammer or up in the baseball parking lots.  SP police will be ticketing.  The main parking lot is reserved for those with passes (coaches, adult refs, board members), handicapped and TOPSoccer families.

·        9/25 games will be at the SP oval as part of Community day.  Schedule shows opponent and rough time of day for the game, but particular times will be determined later to work around the parade.

Coaching Guidelines

·        All coaches need to fill out a Volunteer disclosure form.  These should be returned to the concession stand.

·        Coaches need to commit to licensing to improve.  Encouraged to attend the U6/U8 Y-license (9/13 & 9/15) at the Middle School.  SPSA will also pursue an E-license class for the spring.

·        Head coaches need to help promote assistant coaches to bolster our coaching ranks for the future.

·        Provide parents with a team sheet, summarizing roster, schedule, parking/jewelry restrictions & team responsibilities.  Recommend assigning duties, rather than asking for volunteers.

·        Make practices fun and instructional; maximize touches; be prepared ahead of time

·        Players should play equal amounts of time and encouraged to play all positions

·        De-emphasize winning

·        Always play with equal numbers (play down or borrow from the opposing team).  Do not draft players from other teams or age groups.

·        Consult the SPSA or PAWest websites for practice tips

Team Responsibilities

·        Field maintenance assignments provided (1 person per team for 3 hrs)

1.     Concession stand maintenance

2.     Goal construction field layout/lining

3.     Dirt moving

·        Field set-up and take-down provided

1.     First or last team on a field

2.     Includes field conversions on field A

3.     Morning set-up at 7:00 AM, 2 persons per assigned team

4.     Do not disassemble U8 nets at take-down; stow in assembled form

5.     Clean up sidelines after every game

·        Concession assignments provided

1.     Coordinated with game schedule

2.     Two persons per team

3.     Children must be over 12 to be in concession stand

4.     Paul Caracciolo to remind teams of concession responsibilities on a weekly basis; coaches should then remind those that are assigned

·        Community Day set up assignments were made for evenings of the preceding week and takedown for teams scheduled for the final games of the day.

·        Parking monitors have been assigned for the busiest times of the day for the first four weeks of play at Evans field.

Referee Information & Rules Of The Game

·        Exceptions to standard rules for In-House Play

1.     U5 (3v3) & U6 (4v4): both without a keeper; leniency on throw-ins; no offsides; no slide tackling

2.     U8: 6v6; second chance on throw-ins; no offsides, but no cherry-picking, either; no slide tackling (1 warning)

3.     U10: 7v7; second chance on throw-ins (fall-only)

4.     U12G: 8v8 on the U11 travel field; regulation goals

5.     U12B: 7v7 on the U11 travel field; regulation goals

6.     U15: max of 10v10 (depending on number of subs, play equal #s)

·        General rule change

1.     Substitutions of any number of players may be made by the defending team on a throw-in, as long as the attacking team (i.e., the team taking the throw-in) is also substituting.

2.     Substitutes must still enter at the mid-way line to avoid confusion.

·        Miscellaneous

1.     Shin guards must be covered (wrap-arounds are OK)

2.     Toe cleats are OK; no metal screw-in cleats are allowed.

3.     Absolutely no jewelry will be allowed.

4.     U5/U6 coaches on the sidelines, only.

5.     Max of 3 coaches on a sideline; must stay between 18 yard lines

6.     Must leave field (game or practice) on any lightning or thunder.  Cannot return until ½-hour has passed from last sign of either.  PAWest rules for insurance liability.

·        SPSA needs referees, both adult and youth (U10 and above; will look at U09s for the spring).  Certified referee classes of 20 hours are also available for those age 12, and older (see PAWest website).

·        No badgering of referees should occur.  Any problems should be brought to the attention of Bob Huddart or John Papinchak.  Remind parents of this, too.

Procurement

·        Uniforms are on a tight schedule.  At latest they will be available at the concession stand on the first week of play.

·        If desired, assistant coaches shirts can be ordered at the concession stand on the first week of the season (9/11).  Please pay at that time.

All coaches were encouraged to provide feedback to the SPSA board to improve the organization.  It was announced that the next general membership meeting is 9/13 at 7:30 PM in the Community Room.  Team rosters were distributed to the coaches.  They were directed to contact their players within the next few days (and to remind them about the upcoming club referee class).

The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM.
